The Earth’s greening affects carbon absorption by plants

Recently researchers at North Carolina State University have published a paper and have told that the leaves produced by the plants as greenery have an effect on the amount of carbon dioxide they Store and capture.

A big question for the future climate is that what will happen to the vegetation which are the biggest stores of carbon on this earth. Rising temperatures and longer growing seasons will affect how carbon is cycled between vegetation and the environment.

Due to climate change, some areas become more green, its effect becomes brown in other places. This change is due to higher temperature in climate which negatively affects photosynthesis and promotes the release of more carbon.

An early spring can be good for plant production as it has a long time to take up carbon, but a long autumn can worsen the situation as plants release carbon in autumn.

Researchers used satellites that measure infrared light to determine the biomass of leaves. And found that the biomass of leaves affects carbon uptake more than the longer season.

The biomass of leaves refers to the total amount of living organic matter contained in the leaves of a plant or a group of plants. This includes the mass of the leaves themselves, as well as any associated structures such as stems, petioles, and veins.

Biomass of leaves

Biomass of leaves is the total amount of living organic matter contained in the leaves of a plant or a group of plant. This includes the mass of the leaves themselves as well as any associated structures such as stems, petioles and veins.

The biomass of leaves can vary depending on factor such as the species of plant, the age of the leaves, the growing conditions, and the season. In general, younger leaves tend to have a higher biomass than older leaves, and plants that receive more sunlight and nutrients tend to have larger leaves & higher overall biomass.

Measuring the biomass of leaves is an important part of studying plant ecology and understanding the role of plants in ecosystems. It can be done using variety of methods, including direct weighing of the leaves, estimating leaf area & thickness and using remote sensing techniques such as satellite imagery.

FAQ

Q1.: What is biomass in leaves?

Ans: Biomass inside the leaves in a way tells the presence of the total amount of carbon substances in the leaves of the plant. It contains both living and non-living components present in the leaf. like cells, tissues, chlorophyll, water and other substances.

Q2.: What is dry biomass of plants?

Ans: Dry biomass of a plant reflects the total organic matter present in it when all the water is removed from it. It contains both living and non-living components of the plant

Q3.: What is the meaning of biomass allocation?

Ans: We can understand biomass allocation inside a plant such a way that the plant distributes the total amount of its resources and energy in its different parts like leaves, stems, roots, and reproductive structures.

Q4.: What are three types of biomass fuels?

Ans: 1. Wood and Wood Waste: In the form of wood, it is the most commonly used biomass fuel. It is used as logs, chips, sawdust, and other wood waste.
2. Agricultural crops and residues: Crops such as corn, wheat, sugarcane, etc. can be used by converting them into biomass fuel such as ethanol. Apart from this, straw, husks and stalks in the form of residues can be used as biomass.
3. Municipal Solid Waste: Food waste, yard waste, paper and other organic materials can also be used as biomass fuel by converting them into biogas etc.
