Gary Rossington, last founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, dies at 71
Famous Guitarist-songwriter Gary Rossington has passed away at the age of 71 on Sunday, March 5. Gary Rossington was the last surviving member of the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Gary Rossington is an American musician, best known as one of the founding members and guitarists of the iconic southern rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Born on December 4, 1951, in Jacksonville, Florida, Rossington formed Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1964 with Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins, among others.
Rossington played guitar on some of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s most famous songs, including “Free Bird,” “Sweet Home Alabama,” and “Gimme Three Steps.” Rossington was involved in a serious car accident in 1976 that left him hospitalized for months and forced the band to take a hiatus. He later rejoined Lynyrd Skynyrd in the 1980s and has been with the band ever since.
Rossington has also released solo albums and collaborated with other musicians. As a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
